Fish Tacos with Slaw

Becky with Fish Tacos at Frankie B's Tavern

No Problem Here

Becky is on a no carb kick. At our writing group meetings she usually orders a salad with strips of chicken laid atop it, but at Frankie B’s most items on the menu include some type of bun, shell, or wrap. Therefore, I was curious to see how she would avoid the bread. She ordered the fish tacos with slaw and they were huge. Three large shells stuffed with fish, lettuce, sauce, spices, and pickled onions. A ginormous dollop of coleslaw on the side. I can’t eat fish, but the shells looked delicious. After a few bites, I asked Becky to describe her meal. She grew very serious as she searched for the proper “writerly” words. She declared the tacos were quite good. The fish appropriately seasoned and flakey with a mild spicy sauce that gave it just enough kick. The slaw gives it a nice crunch and the pickled onions brings it all together with a nice punch. When she completed her meal, I noted that the taco shells remained. Becky, my carb counting friend, stated she would in fact not eat the shells. They were simply vessels to contain the deliciousness inside. I nodded my head and realized there never really was a conflict with her meal after all. Indeed, Becky knew from the start the purpose of those shells.
