A picky eater with lots of allergies reviews a plain burger at the Muddy Moose Restaurant.
Trailside Burger

Show Time

Of course, I ordered the Trailside Burger. As you know, I always order the burger. But this time, I knew I’d enjoy it because I’ve eaten it a gazillion times. My burger arrived, thick and nicely seated on a brioche bun. I grabbed the ketchup and lifted and the bun and “Oh My God! What is this?”
Dan reached over and turned the plate to get a better look. “It’s called seasoning,” he deadpanned.
“I KNOW it’s seasoning,” I answered, aware that my tone was a little more than annoyed. “What kind of seasoning?”
Before Dan could answer, I flagged down a waitress and asked, also noting that I have many food allergies and I have never had this burger with this seasoning in all the times I’ve eaten at The Muddy Moose. The waitress hurried away to ask the chef. While I was waiting to learn if this burger would kill me or not, I nibbled on the fries.
Worth the Wait
The waitress returned and I looked up at her expectantly. Disappointment overcame me when she declared that the flecks on my burger were from something called Montreal seasoning. Well, I’ve never heard of this, so clearly I would have to order something else. The waitress looked down at me over her glasses and Dan patted my hand. He answered for me. Apparently, I was going to enjoy this burger whether it killed me or not. I glared at Dan. “It’s a fancy name for salt and garlic. You’re fine. You love garlic. Eat the burger.” The waitress walked away and I scraped as much seasoning off as I could before raising the burger to my lips. I was nervous, but Dan was smiling at me, so I took a bite. And I’m so glad I did! This burger was fantastic! A thick patty cooked to perfection between a nice soft bun. I tasted hints of the Montreal seasoning and it was actually quite tasty, but don’t let Dan know. Oh, and the fries! Excellent! Crispy on the outside. Warm and soft on the inside. Very lightly salted. A perfect burger experience. And for someone that hates burgers, that’s an incredible compliment. A burger I would praise the whole ride home.
Our drive home took us through the White Mountains, across the Kancamagus, and eventually back to our hometown where we immediately started planning our next trip up north.
