Onion Rings
Rings
Dan and I don’t typically order an appetizer, but it was after 3:00, we had skipped lunch, and we were starving. We ordered onion rings because that’s a safe option for me. A plate arrived with enough onion rings to serve everyone in the restaurant. Luckily it was an odd hour, so barely any of the six-hundred seats were filled, but we definitely could have shared the rings with the six other diners seated near us. And those rings were hot! Dan shoved a ring in his mouth and quickly grabbed his soda as his eyes began to water. He gave me a cautionary glance as I reached over for a ring of my own. I took a little nibble and decided that the rings weren’t really that hot. But maybe that was because I was being cautious. Clearly homemade, the thin, crispy breading wasn’t the typical beer batter found at most restaurants. A batter that neither Dan nor I enjoy. Dan would have preferred a dipping sauce for a little kick, but since I don’t like things that kick, I found them very yummy.
Newicks Clam Chowder
Clams
Dan’s chowder arrived with the onion rings, so he was feeling a little conflicted. What to eat first? Choose wrong and he’d be left with one of the dishes cold. He started with an onion ring then dug into his chowder. It was obviously very good as he didn’t stop to comment as he shoveled it in. And it was good. Very good. But also as expected for fresh seafood near the ocean. Dan enjoyed it, but remarked it was just like any other New England Clam Chowder he’s had from any restaurant in New England. And that’s a good thing! Dan thinks himself a clam chowder connoisseur.
Fish and Chips
Fish
At first, Dan beamed at the size of his platter. Two large pieces of fish topped eight other tiny pieces. A handful of fries beneath the fish. Fresh with an even ratio of fish to breading, but too thin. Unsure of the type of fish, Dan couldn’t comment on the taste because each bite was more of a swallow than a chew. The meal came with a side of cole slaw, crisp and fresh. We have a local deli that Dan uses as a measure for cole slaw. Newick’s might have beat out the hometown favorite. Dan favored the cole slaw over the fish and I’m pretty sure that was the highlight of his meal.
