No Smoke

When one visits a smokehouse with visible smoke pits on the porch, one expects their food to have a smokey flavor. And Dan loves flavor. Unfortunately for Dan, there was not a hint of smoke in either of his dishes. His appetizer arrived first – burnt ends. Dan was expecting brisket, but could neither confirm nor deny that that’s what he got.. Two sauces, one sweet, one spicy, accompanied the five chunks of meat. The first bite was very good, very tender, but very crunchy. However, a thick crust encased each morsel and Dan was annoyed that the ends couldn’t be pulled apart. Almost like they’d been fried. And zero hint of smoke. The spicy sauce had a bit of kick, but Dan was also expecting a bit of smoke of which there was none. His second bite was not tender at all. Each bite revealed a different experience, each worse than the last. By the time Dan got to the last couple pieces, he was attacking them with a knife and the burnt ends were winning.

No Flavor

Within a minute of Dan’s appetizer being served, our meals arrived. Dan was happy to have the sauces from the appetizer to dip the pulled pork into because it definitely needed flavor. Again, no smokey taste, not even a hint of vinegar. The platter included a side of macaroni and cheese, spiral noodles swimming in a creamy sauce. The corn bread was dry and there was no butter for miles. The cole slaw was also devoid of flavor and Dan wondered aloud if perhaps he had COVID and had lost his sense of smell and taste. Nope..he was perfectly healthy. The problem was not him, it was the food.
