No Fooling Around
I’d been on a quest to meet authors and learn about publishing and L.M. Pampuro answered the call. Not only an author, L.M. runs her own publishing company. I was thrilled! She recommended meeting at The Monkey Farm Cafe in Old Saybrook, CT. An old house on a busy corner built in the early 1800s, the restaurant served as an inn for travelers trekking from Boston to New York. It remained an inn until the mid-1970s when tenants were forced out due to renovations. Today, it functions as a restaurant only with the vacant rooms upstairs used for storage, but the nostalgia remains. Tilted booths on slanted floors, drafty windows encasing the wrap around front porch, and a huge bar in the center of the main room blasting loud music. It’s perfect because the music is far inside, but I’m also inside within the enclosed porch. No bugs, no drone of the traffic, just the muffled beats of current rock.
Mean Business
Menus often hold a history, and as we perused ours, I took note of the rag tag group of men that called this place home during the 1960s. I imagined a lot of monkeying around and pointed to the oversized gorilla standing guard at the front door ready to welcome guests. After we ordered, I jumped right into my research. I had a million questions and she answered them all honestly. L.M. is a wealth of information and has published several books herself. I was honored when she gifted three of them to me. Her books, focused in and around Hartford, CT, are a mix of crime, suspense, and grit, and I was a bit worried about reading these titles because crime, suspense, and grit are far from my typical go-to genres. Surprised, I found L.M.’s writing whimsical, sneaky, and delightful. Her stories instantly transported me back in time as her characters explored places of my childhood. We enjoyed chatting throughout our lunch and for at least an hour after. I am looking forward to putting her ideas into practice for myself.
