Boomerangs Roadhouse
Friday 5:45pm
Turned In
The proof had arrived and I had finished proofreading, marking edits in the margins and changing a handful of words. It was time. Time to return the proof copy of Sutton’s Home to my publisher. So on a warm Friday in June, after Dan finished his work day, we drove to Rhode Island. I could have returned the proof via mail, but I was too excited. We left the house at 3:30 and arrived in West Warwick an hour and a half later. You would think since Connecticut and Rhode Island are two of the top three smallest states in the union, that it would be a quick trip from one state to the other. It’s not. For some reason, Rhode Island is impossible to get to from where I live. There is no highway and lots of water. And the roads in Rhode Island are so twisty it feels like you’ve passed the same landmark twice. Despite this, we made the trip and decided to have a Burger Adventure while we were there.
Turned Out
We left my proof in the good hands of my publisher and carefully wound our way around a sharp corner and a quick left into Boomerangs Roadhouse. Dan’s hand remained on the gear shift, the engine still running, and looked at me. I gulped. Two other cars sat on the slab of pavement surrounding a run down building. Not really knowing anything about West Warwick much less its safety rating, Dan was ready to try anywhere else. But I insisted we stay. Mostly because the name of the restaurant lent itself nicely to a potential Burger Adventure blog. Dan relented and shut down the engine. We sauntered into a nearly empty room with three tables and a handful of booths. Pine paneling on the wall continued into a second room that held the bar. Rap music blared through invisible speakers and for a moment I thought we had traveled back to the 1990s. I quietly wondered where all the people were on this sunny and overwhelmingly hot day. It was a Friday, but maybe everyone chose to barbecue instead of eat out? Nevertheless, I grabbed a booth and Dan was clearly shocked that I wanted to stay. We were even more shocked by what happened next.
