Day Tripping

Dan and I were near the end of a day-long adventure. We had driven two and half hours to the Vermont Institute of Natural Science and spent three hours there viewing and learning about birds of prey. We even walked above the trees to view an eagle’s nest and surrounding terrain. Then we drove another hour to Shelburn, Massachusetts to enjoy the Bridge of Flowers before the weather became too cold for the flowers to survive. It was a perfect day and we were excited to end it with a perfect meal.
Tripped Up
It was a Sunday, and places close early on Sundays. Especially in Shelburn. Dan quickly Googled restaurants and discovered that the pub we had planned on dining in served drinks, but required you to bring your own food. And while the bakery wasn’t quite suitable for dinner, it didn’t matter because that was closed too. Our other options either didn’t have items on the menu that were safe for me or required us to drive just outside of the downtown area, and we hadn’t yet explored the glacial potholes. And then we happened upon Hotfire. We opened the door, climbed the steps that greeted us, and made our way to a table. The lady tending bar hollered over to us that we needed to order at the cash register which was at the bar. So Dan got up and brought back two menus. We made our selections and he approached the register again and ordered. It was early for dinner, so maybe it was just easier for the bartender to have us order at the bar. But as the minutes ticked by, and the small dining room filled, it seemed everyone was ordering at the bar. We were quite surprised because the dining room, with its dark wood tables and quiet ambiance, screamed traditional casual dining. And after logging over 12,000 steps for the day, we were ready to sit back and be waited on. What we got was anything but.
